Re: Representing the DIY book scanner community in NYC

Books: you don't pay for a book. You pay for other added value (very good examples have been made in previous posts) When I consider most of the books in my library, I don't think I'd have any interest in much "other added value." sure, that stuff starts happening but mainly with fiction ...

Re: Representing the DIY book scanner community in NYC

Fobnomi your idea sounds great except we dont live in communist styled countrys, we are capatilist /quote] To call it "communist" is a bit far-fetched :-) but .... the de facto situation is that: 1 copy of a software is sold (let's call it "capitalist contents market") 99 copies...

Re: Representing the DIY book scanner community in NYC

Returning a bit to the discussion on the state and future of copyright, a small rant to express my opinions on this subject.. Partially motivated by previous posts, and partially by the flu :-) I think the future of copyright cannot be discussed if we don't put the matter into perspective, i.e. we d...

Of google Books, and of Walled Gardens

I know this is absolutely off-topic, but it's rather related to what Dan was saying about "walled gardens" and to confirm why bookscanning should be an open movement. Take a look at this book: http://books.google.it/books?id=l-Rp5hsHdMEC, which is a 1882 edition of an ancient Latin transla...

Re: Plautus's build thread!

an internal battery is dead That can be easily replaced. It's just one of those "coin-style" batteries. The procedure is explained at page 184 of the manual, "Replacing the Date Battery" if you don't have a manual, you can get it here: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controlle...

Re: Representing the DIY book scanner community in NYC

Well, my talk is up. I am in bed with a bit of flu, and so I had the good occasion to watch the conference. You were really brilliant. and I am SOOO flattered! Being used as an example of "a beautiful obsession" ! woo :-) AND the other examples (of scanner users) went straight to the poin...

Re: Your other projects

Awesome projects. I am building a light field camera . (this is just a fraction of the final camera): Meh! I was all proud of my twin-camera system.... How big are you thinking? EDIT: actually, my project goes in completely different directions.. Starting from my long-exposition timelapse script: h...

Re: need some advice

Personally I tried a basic 3 x optical zoom and it worked just fine, I put my camera as close to the page as it will focus, which for my Canon is about 20 inches. Two quite different point of views, yet two (as far as I can say) satisfied users. That probalby means that's not a critical factor, as ...

Re: Initial File Format

Now that I think about it.... It might seem obvious, but I am pretty sure somebody will have overlooked this, and I didn't find it mentioned anywhere: Set compression to "Superfine" !!! This setting tells the camera how much the JPGs should be compressed. You find this setting in the menu ...
