Re: Do we actually need portable cameras ?
Here are two sets of images and text files. Those marked Kaiser were done with a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 (2 megapixels); those marked Beaujour were done with a Logitech C910 (5 megapixels). If I had kept the same text for both, the comparison would have been more useful, but they were done at dif...

Re: Do we actually need portable cameras ?
I just bought a Logitech C910. When I can get back to my computer at home, I'll post a trio of pictures consisting of a straight shot of a page, the ScanTailor-processed TIFF file, and the OCR version using Abby FineReader 5.0. The C910 can do a true 5 megapixel image, non-interpolated, and I found ...

Re: Do we actually need portable cameras ?
I experimented last year with Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000s (you can find my posts and others' comments somewhere in the Forum by using the search function and looking for "Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000"). You can focus them manually by using the software, but I wasn't able to get a stereo setu...

Re: DIY Microfilm / Microfiche Scanner
Our library still has a large number of ultramicrofiches from the early 1970s, when that technology was poised to allow more compact archiving of books. We still have the portable reader (a sort of bulky version of what would now be a tablet-sized reader). Since these 3" x 5" fiches were c...

Re: Camera Mounting Bracket Alignment
An alternative to the gooseneck solution is loc line, originally used for acquariums but handy for many other applications. It is also modular, with individual parts and fittings that snap together, and flexible enough to reposition easily. I first ran across it as a portable tripod component.

Re: From copy stand to scanner
Yes, at least they were on the original setup. I haven't had a chance to find a suitable filter for the camera(s), but I have tried shooting through one of the squares while the other is clamped to the light, and it can, when rotated, cut down on some reflection.

Sorry for the long delay in responding. It's a single sheet, packaged rolled up.

Re: Brainstorming about portable book scanners.
This idea may seem rather goofy, but I'm still trying to figure out if there's a way to use those plastic and metal skirt and trousers hangers that have a stiff rod with two clips, each with rubber pads, and often with a frame of clear plastic. IMG_0211.JPG One possibility would be to remove the hoo...

From copy stand to scanner
IMG_0202.JPG A colleague in the biology department gave me an old Spiratone copy stand (remember Spiratone from the distant film days?). It has some potentially useful components. The gooseneck arms that hold the two light fixtures (complete with polarizing filters) are just right for mounting the ...

Re: Alternative to drawer slides
I forgot to mention that Harbor Freight also sells tool-box liner for about $2.95. It consists of a 2' x 1.5" sheet that is just the right size to cover the cradle.
