Simple inverted platen bookscanner design

Based on all the fine designs found on this forum, I finally managed to document my current bookscanner.

It uses an 110 degrees angle between the platen, and is easy to construct; some woodworking, 3D-printer availability, metalworking. It remains a work in progress...

what camera are u using ?
how are u capture images?
upload a scanned image .
use cardboard to hide the camera

how many pages per hour can u capture ?

use htc splitter to make electric trigger and have a/v liveview

if u use magnetic switcher u can go for 1800 pages per hour.


something more dont capture in tiff
convert the tiff to djvu before make pdf

Thanks for the response. I updated the page with some more information.

The camera's are Canon A2500 running CHDK. This produces JPGs which are converted to TIFFs by ScanTailor. Tesseract makes PDFs which are collected on one PDF by pdftk. Bookmarks are generated by a script and added to the PDF bu pdftk. This procedure allows both searchable text and meaningful page labels. All open source and Linux based.

Another goal of the project was make something smaller and less complex than the Archivist. It is a hobby, not my job .

for me also is a hobby

u capture the images using pi-scan or you use a linux macine ?
do u capture and use sd card to transfer images or somehow wireless or with a usb cable?

use 2 sd cable extenderto to not move the camera if u use the sd card.

i insist for electric trigger and a/v liveview check from the video i sent u around 7.10 min use english subtitles .u can also use it in this design

When using the bookscanner (only for pages in a book I don't want to destroy) I use a USB-memory stick and move that to the Linux-PC. The camera SD-card only contains the CHDK image, no images. BTW, I don't use real batteries, but a dummy and a custom power supply 4.3V, 2A (they weren't very expensive from ebay).

Live view would be nice, but confusing and lots of hardware for the two camera's. I might try installing a single webcam looking at the two platen to check my page alignment. The camera's are outside the light cone coming from the light source. Before I had that they could easily get confused and de-focus.

For me the process phases are separate; first scan all pages to the Pi-scan storage, move the stick to the PC and process there to an ocr-ed PDF. From your video I understand it is more integrated for you. Direct feedback is nice to have!

The books I scan are mainly technical documentation for the vintage/retro computer community. But I occasionally download books from libgen, soon to be blocked here in the Netherlands .

Maybe later I turn the whole thing upside down and make a book cradle and lift mechanism. The advantage is that you can see the pages you are scanning. Pi-scan does a good job storing the images, but the camera's occasionally get confused. I'm thinking about a power cycle mechanism to reset them.

this splitter cost around 2 euro each . i believe here is the most practical method to scan

the camera it autofocus each time i capture
1800 pages per hour, no camera error 3,0 sec till u start to scan


dont use the webcam use 2 old a/v tv or go for or 2 small a/v monitor for car. u need liveview because
1 calibrate the camera
2 check that 2 pages are capture each time u press the trigger
3 see if the the contect of the book is not in the middle .

don use 2 webcams u will have mechanological issues , use directly a/v .

from you comments i see u got the point capture images and process .

but if u dont find htc splitter u can still use two micro usb for camera to make a 5 volt button and have two old webcam to check the screen of each camera .

since u are familiar with electronics can i make u two off topic question about a usb hub i use as electric trigger ?
