Hi
I scan a lot of technical litterateur for the Volvo Amazon club in Sweden.
All the paper has been scanned and I have (to many) book waiting for scanning.
I have look into building a scanner with CNC equipment but the Company I finned is to expensive.
The cheapest way (I hope) for me is to cut it with laser.
Company do not really like to laser cut wood because the "slag" from the wood will bur in the laser cuter and the filter system when they laser cut metal in the next job.
So this work is Schedule as the last work next week. After this the will clean the laser cutter and closing down the factory for the summer holiday.
My plan is to cut out 2 pcs of hackerspace scanner.
I have 2 pcs of glass from a Xerox copier (A3) for the plate
I looking into buying 2 pcs of used Canon 550D
Pictures will arrive.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
So here is some pictures
The first cutting went wrong. There was some strange thing in the file that made the machine “go nuts”.
But the material I have is 4 x 9 feet so there was some space for extra “spares”
The material is old used shelf (for free)
Second cutting in progress
Everything in the car
Try to fix the “puzzle”
Some parts is missing.
The platen is 4 pcs of the “same side”. The good part it is (read wider) so I can adjust that later.
There mast been some "mix up" when they adjust the cutting file with the spares.
The hole for the bearing is not a “snug fit” so I have to use the F608 (with a flange)
That’s all for today.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
So I got some hours over today and start to test to assembly the scanner before painting
The laser cutter can cut 10mm stainless steal and 18mm wood…
I do not mined “burn wood smell” but this get to intensive. So that is not that nice.
I have take some time to take the “ashes” away from the side of the parts.
First the base
I don’t have “the right tool to adjust the thickness so I use this.
I don’t know the right word for the tool so I just show the pictures.
Drill with “adapter”
Base with “arms”
Testing
Cradle
Todays work
I need to order the bearings (from Asia) now.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
Why buying bearings to Asia? Bearings are something really easy to find, and normally they are cheap. And you only need 20 bearings for the whole scanner. It's only worthed to order if you are going to use a lot of bearings, which I believe is not the case!
Just a suggestion for you. Really nice looking scanner.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
In Sweden many things is expensive.
the 608 bearings cost like 4$ pcs.
From Asia I can have 10 pcs for 3$ including transport.
I Think that the bearings from Asia is low quality for that price but it is probebly OK to use in this setup.
I need the F608 and that will increas the price.
The price for Products in US is very low compear to Sweden.
We pay over $9 / gallon for regular petrol.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
So now I have build the lamp holder after the 10 watt LED I hawv at home.
The body of the scanner
I do not know whay you have cut down the end to a thinner dimention.
Instead of make the end thinner I have decided to make the hold wider to 18mm.
In my view the thin end is only a waist of machine time, it is easyer to make the hole 18mm.
I have cut down the end for the glass
This side is OK
But the other side is the same. (due to some problem with the cut file in the laser)
But a fast fix with the saw
Thats all for today.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
So I have got the bearings from Asia now so the work can start up again.
When I was mounting the bearings to the cradle I did make a change in the way it was mounted.
In Sweden we have a “small” company called “Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryd, Agunnaryd” in short IKEA.
They have delivered the “flat packets” so I did make my change in that direction.
And to connect the platen/camera to the base.
Testing all
I am still waiting for a packet more and I do need to buy the rest of the hardware soon.

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
I am still waiting for a parcel from Asia.....
And I have to much to do at work but... I have got one camera now.
A Canon 550D with 18-55 IS for $285.
I have also worked out a way to take the picture without touching anything.
No computer just the scanner and the cameras.
We will see if it´s working IRL

Re: Hackerspace scanner, the laser cut version
Hi
I am planning to build my own scanner using the plans downloaded from this site. I have access to a laser-cutting machine and was wondering if you ran into any issues using a laser cutter, rather than a cnc router? I read that the plans are intended for a router, rather than a laser cutter, so I was wondering how you got around any problems which arose from your choice of a laser cutter?
