Gorilla Glass & Aluminosilicate glass

Built a scanner? Started to build a scanner? Record your progress here. Doesn't need to be a whole scanner - triggers and other parts are fine. Commercial scanners are fine too.

here is the contact info for Corning:

I contacted their corporate office trying to see about a group buy. I'll let folks here know if I got any better luck... probably not, but worth a shot.

GrayGlass is now supplying LAS IOX-strengthened glass. This is Gorilla Glass [tm] and other brands. I'd be interested in exploring the needs of this list, to see if there is a market fit with our fabricating and your needs as a group.

This thread seems somewhat inactive.

I assume a group buy did not go through. Has anyone purchased from China?

No one made a group buy from this site.

I would definitely be interested in evaluating Gorilla Glass and similar glasses for the new CNC-cut scanner. I will be following up with Bart to see if we can get some evaluation materials.

Has anyone on this thread successfully sourced G.G. for their platen? Group buy or not, I'm interested in knowing whether anyone has managed to get past the "evaluation" phase and order the 11"x14" size dictated by Daniel's scanner kit?

I gave up trying to source GG and went with Museum Glass from Hobby Lobby (yes, Hobby Lobby has Tru Vue museum glass).

Thanks for the update DrCheap! I contacted a local picture-framing company, but their response seemed odd. I didn't explain what I was using it for but after they said "Yes" they had it in stock, they stated "because of the delicate handling they should probably fit it to the frame for me." Isn't this stuff supposed to be the opposite of delicate? While I'm certainly not expecting bullet-proof glass I'm confused as to why they would say that. Maybe they're just trying to upsell, but how can I know I'm even getting Tru-Vue museum glass if it's just as delicate as regular glass? Is there some way to tell?

I am just guessing here but Museum glass is very vulnerable to fingerprints. You need to use gloves when you are handling the glass. That is what my local picture-framing told me anyways.

The price for 2 pieces 11" x 14" Tru Vue Museum Glass via Ebay is average $90. See two offers here and here.

Hobby Lobby charged me $30 per pane, $60 total, cut them while I waited, gave them to me in brown craft paper ready to mount. Be sure they cut it so that they leave an edge to indicate which side goes against the book/paper and while side faces the camera.
