Hi!

Still active over here.
Finally I've got a pair of Canon EOS 100D (SL1). They're absolutely amazing taking standard photos.
This week I'll start to scan books as soon as I finish the frame build. Will post photos then.

The 100D and 1200D have 18 mpix as the 550D that I shall use.

I have my second 550D being post tomorro (I hope) so then I have 2 of those.
I did not find so many used 100D and 1200D so there for I did go for the 550D

I got the last for $220...

I have also order LED to build a "video light".
So I am "rebuilding" the unit before it is ready to use the first time.

lpm vs reolution vs light

Post by qv_ »

I printed out a resolution sheet from http://www.bobatkins.com/photography and start to test the 550D 18 Mpix camera.

I first use the camera in lowlight condition. With a tripod and ISO200 f8 and 1.5 sec I got 75 lpm with the kit lens. If I use the 50 f1.4 lens I got 80 lpm.
75 lpm (lines per mm) equal a 10 mpix camera
If I ad some light (in my living room) so I got ISO 200 f8 1/8 sec I got 92 lpm with the kit lens.
95 lpm equal 15 mpix camera.
The max from a 18 mpix sensor is 106 lpm.
The kit lens is a 18-55 IS
Tomorrow I have to go to the police. The seller have not send me the second 550D…..

al this lpm vs mpix is for a APS-C camera

Wow, nice job qv_. I will take a look to test the 100Ds in that way.
Aren't the camera to far away from the resolution sheet? In the scanner it will be about 50cm far away from paper.

Sorry to hear about your not sent camera, hope you have success with the case.

I have ordered today all the structure for the scanner, I think it will be ready by the weekend.

I have a scale that show me the with of the photo

I take that with an div with the with of the sensor 22.3mm and I then got the "scale"
I look at the resolution on the sheet and multiply it with the "scale"

This is how it is explained in the manual.
I suppose by doing in this way you do not need the perfect printer for the resolution sheet.
If you buy the ISO sheet they are not cheap.

My print out is to big so I have to calculate for that as well.

So I have been sick for some days and have plenty of time to do this testing.

I have been using a Sweden forum when I did all testing.

Conclusion
The camera leave a file with information from the pixels
I like to check how I know that the information on these pixel are "high resolution"

I use a Canon 550D 18 mpix camera
The lens is a 18-55 IS (kit lens)
Best ISO for a Canon camera is ISO 100 or ISO 200 (still need to check this)
Best aperatur for the lens is for 18-35 mm f5,6 and 55mm f8

I was running the test with ISO200, f8, tripod, mirror locking, 10 sec self timer? and around 40mm on the zoom
I did not use the scanner in this setup.

To get "15 mega pixel" information from this 18 mega pixel sensor I need to
Not using the low price LED lamp.
I got better resolution with low energy lamps
You need to get the light in 45 degree
I need at least 1200 LUX (from a good light sours) I used a total of 50 watt 2x11 watt 2x14 watt
You should not use a flash, and if you do use external.

If I use a low price LED with 1500-2000 LUX I get 12 mega pixel of information

10 mpix = 330 dpi on A4
12 mpix = 340 dpi on A4
15 mpix = 400 dpi on A4

hopefully you can get 18 mega pixel in information with this lens but you need more light.

I did not double check every thing so I need to take away 6% extra on this...

Hi again!

It's alive!! Here's my book scanner

It stills need to be painted in black and cover everything with more black, but it's working like a charm even with some reflection. Abby FR 12 does miracles.
The setup are a bunch of aluminium profiles with a custom design made by me. The light source it's a huge (seriously, didn't notice it was that bigger when bought it) 30W led lamp which, according to the specs, gives 2700 lumens. I haven't confirmed that.
Finally, as I said before, cameras are a pair of 100D (Rebel SL1) with 18-55 STM lenses. I will try to determine the resolution they get when have some time and patience for it :D Thanks for all the information on the topic, will be very useful.
It's amazing see that the 550D get that resolution.

Will upload some image scans soon.
