My Android Camera Arrived

Nothing much photographed yet, but various initial ramblings are recorded here:

Biggest disadvantage for book scanning seems to be that you can't operate the camera while it is plugged in and charging, so the duration of a scanning session will be limited by battery life (no clue yet if that is likely to be a practical problem or not).

I propped a bunch of stuff together and used some rubber bands and wot-not to rig up a way to try taking a photo of a paperback page using a scheme more or less like what I want to eventually do with a better put together system, and it looks pretty good I think (you can't even really tell there is a sheet of museum glass on top of that page):

Details of my current scanner work (and a link to the full sized raw image) can be found at:

(Most recent stuff near the bottom of that web page).

Well, that's disappointing: Nikon doesn't provide access to the full capabilities of the S800c from the standard android Camera API. The highest resolution image you can take using the standard APIs is 3264x2448 (8 MP) versus the actual full resolution of the camera which is 4608x3456 (16 MP). If I complain about it in enough places, maybe Nikon will be embarrassed into releasing an SDK developers can use to get to the whole camera :-). Samsung definitely has an opportunity here to totally wipe out Nikon in the android camera business (or do something equally bone headed - we'll have to see what the Galaxy Camera can do when they finally release it). All my ramblings on this camera eventually get merged here: http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/har ... nikon.html
