PTP Cameras: A List

Post by ceeann1 »

I stumbled on this list looking for infomation on PTP cameras. Please add to this list as you can. Perhaps this is an alternative way to get a camera controllable by pc for book scanning.

This list below comes from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/libptp/
libptp (Picture Transfer Protocol lib) by kil3r a
Library communicating with PTP enabled devices (digital photo cameras and so on).

I have merged the above list with
"SfR Fresh" - the SfR Freeware/Shareware Archive
Member "libgphoto2-2.4.10.1/camlibs/ptp2/README.ptp2" of archive libgphoto2-2.4.10.1.tar.gz:
linked here: http://www.sfr-fresh.com/unix/privat/li ... EADME.ptp2

Below the list of cameras explicitly supported by gphoto2 ptp driver:
(THIS TABLE IS OUTDATED!!! Maintaining the constantly growing list of
supported cameras is harder than developing the driver ;)

Note that for some HP, Nikon, Canon and Sony cameras you have to switch
them to PTP mode as in most cases the camera is dual mode:
PTP and USB Mass Storage or PTP and native.
For some cameras it even changes the Product ID number, so don't panic if
it does not match the one listed above, just switch the mode.
Don't ask me how to do it. Refer to camera documentation.

In addition I will note that PTP does not have a universal set of functions and may differ from camera to camera. Please include these as you can/ if you can with your posts here. Thanks Ceeann

Thank you. Re lists getting outdated, I found this from gphoto faq useful ( http://www.gphoto.org/doc/manual/FAQ.ht ... ra-support ):
"Is my camera supported? Possible answers:" ... "no, but it is listed as PictBridge(tm) or PTP compatible. Then the camera will likely work without changes to the sourcecode."

A web search for "camera name PTP" quickly shows if it has PTP or not. For example, the Sony W310 has PTP but is not in the list. Too new I guess.

I quite agree with looking the particular camera up in the way you suggest dtic! Thanks for the info and a nice reply!

I add the following. A list of remote controllable cameras from gphoto2. I realize this is available from them but posting it here helps agragate information in one spot for our particular purposes. Unfortunatly I have neither the time nor patience to reformat this list. If you wish to look at it in its original format please go to: http://www.gphoto.org/doc/remote/

Remote controlling cameras

This page lists cameras remotely controllable for capture.
It is meant to be wiki-like, so if you have any additions, please mail them to gphoto-devel@lists.sourceforge.net mailinglist or to marcus@jet.franken.de.
The list is incomplete and might be incorrect.
If you start doing remote capturing, please begin by installing the latest libgphoto2 and gphoto2 stable releases, as remote control improvements and fixes are being added continuously

If a camera is not listed, it might still be the case that is able to support capture.

For instance, it is a very good sign if the vendor supplies software that supports remote capture for this camera. Those are likely able to be supported by libgphoto2 if not already.

Re: PTP Cameras: A List

Post by dtic »

Ok. I misread the gphoto2 docs page then - I thought PTP would imply remote capture, but it seems that only a subset of PTP cameras can do remote capture.
Canon has a matrix (october 11, 2010) of canon cameras that does/does not support remote capture here:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/ ... k_homepage
Low end compacts like A480 A490 A495 do not support remote capture according to that list.

For low cost book scanning we'd need to filter the different lists down to cameras with:
1. remote capture (ideally with official gphoto2 support)
2. enough megapixels (8+ ?)
3. very low price

I think it would be really useful if we could list a handful cameras that fit 1-3 and rank them based on price.

Sidenote: I really don't understand why canon et al aren't supporting "remote capture" for newer low end cameras anymore. Any ideas?

As for further list additions of Number of Pixels and Price. I am working on going through the remote capture list and seeing what sort of numbers of pixels the cameras will capture. They range from 5Megapixels to 14Megapixels so far (rounding a bit) I will post that when I get a chance to finish the list. Enough pixels depends on usage. Personally I want to have 300 dpi from the scanned image... others may want more or less and it is up to the user/ builder. I expect to be scanning fairly large text books up to the size of an encyclopedia so my megapixel needs are fairly high. It takes more than 8 megapixels to scan an encyclopedia britanica in 300 dpi.

The price part is a bit mute since it is so variable depending on when one buys and where the item is purchased. I shall not add this but I certainly could see it being added by anyone who wishes to do the research. A 5 Megapixel camera a few years ago was quite expensive and now is not very expensive. If one buys a 5 megapixel camera from say amazon.com the price can be the original suggested retail price or can be the current devalued price due to age or even the used price in good working order. Any price added should be dated and referenced to the currency and location of purchase for global usage. It seems a bit much to add into our list given the perishability of the information. I suggest perhaps a 5 star rating of 1 star as dirt cheap, 2 star as inexpensive, 3 star as moderate, 4 star as expensive and 5 star as outragous. It is perhaps more usefull than actual prices so long as it is presented with a date, currency, and location of purchase, although this could be argued either way.

Gphoto was used by me as a source for PTP information and not necessarily as the best or only source of camera image capture. I personally like the EyeFi Cards in that they would allow wireless transfere from almost any digital camera so long as the button is pushed and it uses a SD card. I think a pair of solonoids controlled by an Arduino or some such controller would be just as efficient a way to get the information needed from a system with the Eyefi cards. It would lower the bar on remote capture to remote viewing/ preview which is what I at least hope to get from the PTP system.

Remote capture increases the cost of a camera system. If it was just dupication of the old it would be easy but each new camera is a new system. A new camera with increased pixel size would mean new control software and new remote software integration... leaving off the remote capture means less to pay for as a developer and seller, especially tempting if one does NOT lower the price. Seems pretty straight forward although there are lots of nuances that I am no doubt missing at this point.

Re: PTP Cameras: A List

Post by dtic »

I tried to filter the gphoto2 remote capture list for 8+ megapixels (which I think would be enough for scanning many regular sized novels) still being widely sold (excluding used cameras for re-sale) and with a low price tag. I found none  These are the best/least worst I could find:
http://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?j=62 ... 3253,62546
As the price development graph on that (swedish) price comparison site shows, they have all "flatlined", indicating that they've already been replaced by newer models. So either the gphoto2 list is lagging several years or there are almost no newer lower end cameras with gphoto2-compatible remote capture features.

(Of course what widely sold, low price, etc means will vary between regions. Still, many low price point and shoot cameras seem to be rolled out on the market globally. So finding even one such camera that has what it takes would be very useful.)

Interesting site prisjakt.nu ... although I grew up in a swedish american lutheran church... I do not speek swedish. I do however see what you mean about the chart. Are you buying in sweden?

If you are looking for an 8 megapixel camera why not use the defacto standard A590 canon? It seems you will not find a better camera in that range that works with the systems set up here. It can easily be found on ebay and still be found various places new.

it's a market differentiation thing. Lots of people use cheap Canons for industrial and professional imaging tasks -- for example, when I started this project someone contacted me privately who builds tape loading robots with these cameras as the computer vision front-end. Canon would prefer that those kind of people use more expensive cameras with higher margins.

I, too, am interested in identifying cameras that can work this way but PTP is not quite the highest priority for me because I think that the SDM capture method is still a good one. We can figure this out, I am sure it is possible.

It may also be that CHDK can restore PTP support, I haven't looked into that in forever.

I think it is important to identify >10mp cameras that can work via PTP or CKDK... there really isn't many options... Ideally >14mp
