News and Updates for Fall

Quick bleat: I’ll be speaking in NYC, representing the DIY Book Scanner community!

We now have a nice selection of page post-processing software options.

Rob’s PostProcessor is a Java-based OS independent cropper/cleaner;

Aaron’s PageBuilder is an open-source, Matlab based cropper with user-specified cropping;

Spamsickle’s Yet Another Post Processor (YAPP) is a quick’n'dirty shot at a lightweight processor;

Finally, Jradi proposes an alternate software workflow for those who have trouble with the above.

On the camera front, Edvin released yet another useful script. This script is a sort of brute-force method of finding optimal camera settings — it takes a picture with each possible setting, and lets the user find the best combo.

Also on cameras, fbonomi goes the extra mile investigating the aperture problem.

In hardware news, we have a bunch of completed and in-process scanners:

Edvin’s Counterweighted Platen-on-rails build;

Pad’s build with teflon sliders;

Jradi’s build with tripod-based camera holders;

Spamsickle’s floating counterweighted G2;

tsttm’s Desktop scanner;

Edvin’s other build, with hingalellogram;

James415′s drawer slide mechanism build thread;

I have a long-running build thread documenting my “3rd gen” scanner here.
