Re: A better platen movement design
Genius!
You could always use PVC caps instead of bolts to keep it from moving from side to side.

Re: Beta Build
Arguement, I used drawer slides to allow the cradle to move to the right or left, so that the book/cradle can "self-center" as you flip from front to back. I used a router with a rabbeting bit, but that's probably out of the league of most DIY-ers. You could certainly use two triangles, ma...

Re: The New "Standard Scanner"
What is the cost of the drawer slides used for platen glass lifting/dropping? The reason I ask is related to the method of lifting and dropping the platen onto the book. Beta uses linear bearings made from two PVCs, one inside the other. This is crazy inexpensive! Well, yes and no. Once you add the...

Re: The New "Standard Scanner"
Dan, What again is the point of the adjustable cradle? Also, in your experience, what is the maximum travel required for the cradle assembly as you flip from a book's front to back? Does this design move up and down with ease? I think all of my other questions will be answered when you post plans. T...

Re: AP's Book Scanner
Damn! Now I HAVE to go back to the drawing board. Awesome build. I love the "lift-lever/button" thingie. I've toyed with a similar idea using some Foosball table parts I scavanged.
How about some video of the lifting action?
Well done.

Re: Beta Build
Nothing more inventive than a small tripod. You see, I built the scanner around existing photo hardware and accessories. Except for cost, I think it's hard to beat the virtues of a tripod. I did notice though when I was designing and thinking about these things that many of the small point-and-shoot...

Am I correct in understanding that the cameras move (raise) WITH the platen in your design?
