My first book scanner.

Built a scanner? Started to build a scanner? Record your progress here. Doesn't need to be a whole scanner - triggers and other parts are fine. Commercial scanners are fine too.

Here are some picks of my slide that I'm working on. Instead of drilling threw, I am cutting grooves in with the table saw, and gluing them together.

So I finally got a camera. I got a Panasonic DMC-FS15, from costco. I have 90 days to try it out and see if it will work for me (I love costco's return policy). Now i need to find a solenoid, they are really hard to find on the internet. I will try and take some pics just holding it, and see how good the ocr works on it. If every thing works out ill go get another one. If it dose not ill take it back and get my full refund.

Yes it is a 2 1/2in book with 1200 pages

So I went over to homedepot to look for lighting. I wanted 2ft t5 fluorescent lights but i couldn't find a ballast or a cheap enough light fixture. However I did find 4 compact fluorescent lights for $5.

Next I went looking for something to screw them into. At homedepot each one cost $3. So I decided to go over to the Habitat Store, and I found an awesome score. A 4 lamp fixture for a fan, It cost me all of $1.

If one or two of these worked for you, I'd sent it for the cost of postage (I got 'em for free, so will you), shipping will probably be around $5 (for both).

Note to self: don't drop a metal light fixture on a glass platen, they break!

WARNING to all that gorilla glued glass to wood to make a platen. Dont break the glass. I know this sounds like a "WELL DUH!" but I just spent the last 2 hours chipping off glass from wood with a chisel (glass everywhere). It was not fun. It probaly would have been easyer to make a new one.

Gawd, that is so painful to look at. :(

My glued glass platen was broken in the mail -- at least in my case, I was able to laser some new side pieces. What a bummer. This, my friends, is the main problem with a glass platen.
