I know this may be a dead idea, but wanted to document my progress on building the design used by 2 users who were last active around 2014.
It'll consist primarily of 80/20 Aluminum extrusions with a lot of overbuilding and 3D designed and printed parts to get it all working together. I intend to not only show you the process, but also the problems I run into based on this design along the way.

The gray plastic pieces, including the ones with threaded(?) inserts, and the lighter colour assembly to their right?
Maybe you could annotate the lower image in some way, maybe circle or with an arrow?
For anyone wondering: 80/20 is (on searching) a design of general purpose aluminium extrusions that can be used to assemble things.

Posting some updates.
I wanted to have something historical accentuate the scanner so I decided to model the tension knob off of an American eagle from the 1700's.
