Hello everybody !
This topic is about introducing ourselves : we are five engineer students in Ecole Centrale de Lyon, located in Lyon, France.
In September, we were given a subject for a one-year project by our school's library. It was about designing a book scanner for old books, with a major goal concerning the full respect of the books' binding and pages.
With this aim in mind, we've taken our inspiration from some of the designs present here, on the diybookscanner.org forum. And we've decided to build a scanner based on the model of the User Clemd973. This model was quite simple, and it was very easy to modify it so as to implement other elements.
For example, we've decided to help the user raising the V-block responsible for maintaining the page with a system including a pulley, a mass and a belt. This way, we define two stable positions of the V-block and the user only have to push the block a little to make it raise.
Besides, we wanted to make the snapshots automatic. In order to do this, we'll place a push-button, that the V-block compress, so as to give an order to the cameras to take the shots.
We've thought about automating the turn of pages, but this point was really huge, and we didn't have the time to seriously think of it and make it real. Maybe other students will continue it next year.
So, if you have any question, or comment, or advice, just react on this topic.
We thank you in advance !

Project23, that is really fantastic. The clemd973 design is a wonderful design.
I am really excited about your work and want to support you if you need help. Have you built anything yet? If so, could you please post pictures and/or drawings?
Thank you!

Hello,
We're supposed to give a working scanner in June, so we're right in the building phase. Here's the point we've reached. I'd like to share more pictures, but we don't have much ones representative for each different part of the scanner.
Anyway, a part of the project is also to share with the community. In this goal, we've decided, and started to write a tutorial.
For this, we will take many pictures, and list all the materials required to build our improved model. Maybe you could give us advice on this point, as you know the subject very well.
But as you are curious, here's a Catia drawing where the main improvement is represented. These are quick pictures, but we will give you some others in two weeks (we're in holidays for the moment, and we don't have an access to our working lab).
In the mean time, if you have any other questions, or advices, we would be glad to hear them.
